“It’s got to keep going without me.”
Inspired by those storied words from Terry Fox, Tyler McGregor
, team captain of Canada’s National Para Ice Hockey team, and three-time Paralympian and World Champion, is on a cross-Canada Sledge Skate of Hope
. Tyler is skating his sled across ten provinces for a total of 420 KM and hopes to raise $100,000 in support of the Terry Fox Foundation
The Sledge Skate of Hope began in Halifax, NS on Tuesday, January 3rd, 2023, and the finale will be taking place in Prince Edward Island on February 24, 2023.
“If it wasn’t for Terry and his Marathon of Hope, and everything his foundation continues to do, I wouldn’t be where I am,” says Tyler, citing his motivation for this charitable pursuit.
As a former AAA able-bodied hockey player, Tyler's life was changed forever after being diagnosed with Spindle Cell Sarcoma as a teenager, cancer similar to Terry’s, that resulted in his leg being amputated to save his life. It was the story and legacy of Terry Fox that ultimately led Tyler to adapt and seek out new ways to excel as a competitive athlete; finding new love in the game of Para Ice Hockey.
“Hockey player, world-class athlete, Paralympian, cancer survivor, philanthropist are statements that are all worthy of standing alone,” says Brandon Chandler
, Tyler's agent at Dulcedo Sports and Entertainment. “But all those statements combined make Tyler McGregor and it’s why what he's looking to accomplish with the Sledge Skate of Hope is so monumental! It’s a venture that hits close to home.”
In skating his sled, Tyler hopes to follow in the footsteps left by Terry Fox and his Marathon of Hope, inspiring Canadians, young and old, and communities across the country.
