Alycea Adams Is Creating Scalable Impact at the Intersection of Beauty and Technology

Thank you bet for highlighting a huge milestone for my startup hairmatchapp that is focused on

Sometimes the most meaningful wins are not about standing alone at the top, but about being recognized among the few who made it all the way there.

Alycea Adams knows this truth well.

In 2025, Alycea Adams was named a finalist and runner-up in the Microsoft Imagine Cup, one of the most competitive global technology competitions for student developers. Out of countless submissions worldwide, her startup HairMatch earned a spot on the final stage. As a runner-up finalist, Alycea was awarded $25,000. More importantly, she earned global validation for an idea rooted in purpose, innovation, and lived experience.

At just 22 years old, Alycea Adams has already built a career that bridges technology, beauty, and community impact. With over 1.3 million followers across platforms, she is widely recognized as a creator who takes up space in the hair, skin, and beauty industry. But HairMatch goes far beyond content creation. The AI-driven app analyzes hair texture and recommends products specifically for Black and Brown women with curly and textured hair types, a group that has long been underserved on store shelves and in product development.

Building HairMatch From Personal Experience

The idea for HairMatch came from a familiar frustration. Like many people with natural hair, Alycea found herself guessing and testing which products might work, slowly building a shelf of expensive misses. A simple moment watching her grandmother use a plant identification app sparked a realization. If technology could identify leaves, why could it not understand hair? HairMatch was born from that question.

While studying information science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, with minors in entrepreneurship and urban planning, Alycea leaned into curiosity as a skill set. What began as a pivot away from pre-med became a pathway into building technology solutions on her own terms. Partnering with a software developer, she brought HairMatch from concept to app store, integrating AI models that analyze curl pattern, porosity, and density.

Since launching in November 2024, HairMatch has reached thousands of users across nearly 30 countries, with hundreds of paying subscribers. The rapid adoption reflects a growing demand for inclusive beauty technology and data-driven personalization in the hair care industry.

Recognition on a Global Tech Stage

Recognition from Microsoft placed Alycea Adams on a global stage at Microsoft Build in Seattle, where Imagine Cup finalists presented solutions tackling real-world problems through technology. Being named a runner-up finalist is not a footnote. It is a testament to the strength of her vision, her technical execution, and the growing demand for inclusive innovation in tech.

This milestone arrives alongside another major chapter. Following her graduation from UNC Chapel Hill, Alycea Adams began her career at IBM as a brand specialist in technology sales in Atlanta. It is a continuation of the same thread that runs through everything she does: blending strategy, storytelling, data, and systems thinking.
