Amelie Lobato, Team Manager + Senior Account Manager and Mom to Louise

As the first Dulcedo employee to go on maternity leave, how was that process for you?

When I announced my pregnancy, everyone was very supportive and helpful. The process was very smooth. I was able to go to all my medical appointments I had and take the time to recover after giving birth and bond with my baby without being worried about my job once.

How did Dulcedo support you in the weeks leading up to your maternity leave and during your leave?

Communication and planning have been the key. We discussed all the details well in advance, including the expected duration and any company-specific policies related to maternity leave like insurance.

How has the transition process in returning to work been going?

As I decided to come back earlier than planned, the transition process of returning to work was straightforward and organized. After 8 months of maternity leave, I'm sure I’ll get back to my work routine very quickly. Especially thanks to a supportive work environment, and adequate assistance in catching up on any updates or changes that occurred during my absence.

Do you have any tips or advice for new mothers on how to manage their workload and balance work and family responsibilities?

Certainly! Balancing work and family responsibilities can be a challenging task! Here are some tips and advice that may help every new parent in managing workload and achieving a better work-life balance:
  • Discuss your needs and concerns with HR or your supervisor. Open communication can help in setting realistic expectations and exploring potential accommodations or flexible work arrangements that can support your work-life balance.
  • Prioritize and set boundaries: determine your priorities both at work and at home. Set clear boundaries and learn to say no when necessary. Understand that you can't do everything, and it's okay to delegate tasks or ask for help when needed.
  • Plan and organize: use effective planning and organizational strategies to manage your time and tasks efficiently. Utilize tools such as calendars, to-do lists, and reminders to stay organized and stay on top of deadlines.
  • Delegate and outsource: consider delegating tasks at work and at home whenever possible. If you have a supportive partner, family member, or friend, discuss ways they can help with household chores or childcare responsibilities. Additionally, outsourcing certain tasks, such as cleaning or meal preparation, can help lighten the load.
  • Take advantage of available resources: Explore available resources that can help make your life easier, such as childcare services or family support programs. These resources can provide support and guidance in managing work and family responsibilities.
  • Practice self-care: Take care of yourself physically and mentally. Prioritize self-care activities such as exercise and hobbies that help you relax and recharge. Remember that taking care of yourself is KEY for your overall well-being and your ability to fulfill your responsibilities.
  • Foster a support network: Seek support from fellow working mothers, friends, or family members who have experienced similar challenges. Sharing experiences, advice, and support can be invaluable in navigating the complexities of balancing work and family life.
If I learned something since I gave birth is that finding a balance in this new life is an ongoing process and may require adjustments along the way. It's important to be flexible and adaptable. By setting realistic expectations, seeking support, and practicing self-care, you can find a balance that works for you and your family.

What is the best part about working at Dulcedo as a new mom?

What I like about working at Dulcedo is the flexible work arrangements: A company that values work-life balance offers flexible work arrangements, such as remote work options, and flexible hours. These arrangements can allow me to adjust my work schedule to accommodate my family responsibilities.
Supportive company culture: A positive and supportive company culture can make a significant difference. A workplace that creates an environment where I feel valued, respected, and supported in both my personal and professional lives.
As the first mom with a baby at Dulcedo, I hope the company will offer family-friendly benefits such as childcare assistance, parental leave policies, or access to resources for parenting support in the future.

What kind of support do you receive at Dulcedo as a working mother?

I really value the flexibility Dulcedo offers in terms of a hybrid working environment. It gives me time to spend less time commuting and allows me to balance my schedule so that my daughters have access to me. I also have the opportunity to show my girls what it looks like to work hard, as they can physically see me working, and by leading by example I believe I can influence them to be disciplined with their own work in the future while feeling independent. We can work side by side at times and that is a great feeling as a mom. I feel like I can instill a strong work ethic in them as they begin their own careers soon :)
I can sense how proud they are of their mom who hustles for them and that is rewarding too.

Have there been instances where your supervisor has illustrated flexibility and understanding of the obligations that come with motherhood?

It hasn't come up yet but I feel that I can definitely express requests of this nature openly should something arise.

How has Dulcedo helped you in achieving a work-life balance?

Having the possibility to work remotely and feel supported in that is empowering. I know I can better manage the stress of planning things around my kids knowing I have that support. The fact that I can also bring my dog to work occasionally takes the burden off me having to coordinate for my daughters to come over to my place to take him out while they juggle their school obligations. So it all helps manage my day-to-day life!

In your opinion, what makes Dulcedo a great place to work for moms? And on the flip side, have you ever worked within companies that weren't as supportive and what could they have done better?

Dulcedo's friendly culture and openness generate a sense of loyalty. When you feel valued as a human being, not just an employee, it is motivating and inspiring. Last week my daughter Stella came to the office and was so sweetly greeted by our CEO. She felt very welcomed which trickles down to give me a sense of pride to be part of a company that engages on that level.
I have worked for companies that don't give their employees a sense that it is acceptable to work outside of the office…that approach in today's world only backfires in my opinion. I believe that when you empower people and trust that they are accountable, they will work harder and perform because they feel trusted.

What advice would you give to working mothers trying to balance work and family life?

When children are younger I would encourage quality time with them early in the mornings so they don't feel rushed and then find little moments to engage with them after school, while teaching them boundaries while "mommy is working".
With older kids like mine who happen to be super cool young women, I love learning from them about what is happening in pop culture and fashion and then tying it into my professional life. I have the privilege of gaining insight from them by sharing what I do, getting their ideas, and staying current thanks to my connection to them. That is priceless and feels amazing!

Makhinda Borreta, Accounts Receivable Coordinator

Mom to sons Jacob and Jordan

What kind of support do you receive at Dulcedo as a working mother?

As a working mother; Dulcedo has provided flexibility and remote support.

Have there been instances where your supervisor has illustrated flexibility and understanding of the obligations that come with motherhood?

Yes absolutely! I need to log in and log out at certain times to drop off/pick up my child from school. If there is an emergency; my supervisor has always been understanding!

How has Dulcedo helped you in achieving a work-life balance?

Being able to work with flexibility and remotely has provided me with time. What I mean by that, is non rush time. I used to have to rush to drop off the kids, pick them up, rush home to cook dinner, pack the family lunches and help with their homework. By the end of the day; I was mentally and physically exhausted with little to no time to take care of myself because, by the time I was done, it was already bedtime. Rushed time caused by having to drive 1hr or more to and from work due to traffic. This takes up a lot of my time on a daily basis and with little to no flexibility.
For the past year, I've been with Dulcedo; I've noticed a huge change in my daily work-life balance. Now I can wake up at 6 am to go to the gym (which I was never able to do), make breakfast for them, drop/pick them up, make them dinner, pack lunch, and help with homework all with no rush! Now at the end of the day, I have a few hours to really relax and take care of myself. This is really important, a happy/healthy mother will always give back the same energy to her kids.

In your opinion, what makes Dulcedo a great place to work for moms?

Dulcedo simply understands; of course, I think it works both ways. With the support of my managers, I am able to really focus and put 110% towards my work goals when I am logged in and have the same energy towards my family after I log out.

What advice would you give to working mothers trying to balance work and family life?

No matter how busy you are, I know life can be hectic!! Always take care of yourself. HAPPY MOM, HAPPY LIFE!
