As a first time attendee of VidCon, Michelle didn’t know what to expect, but she found herself amongst other TikTokers that represent the Indigenous community and instantly felt at ease. In these types of large-scale speaking events (there were 55,000 people in attendance!), even the most macro of creators are like anyone else - overwhelmed, nervous, and with a slight case of imposter syndrome. However, attending VidCon and seeing that she was surrounded by people she knew, and wanted to hear her perspective, showed Michelle these experiences can be rewarding beyond her wildest dreams (and further her goal of educating her audience and honouring her culture!).
Michelle creates content to educate non-Indigenous people while inspiring Indigenous youth to come out of their shells to express themselves. At VidCon, she was the featured speaker on a panel that directly focused on cultural diversity in the digital space. She shared about her experience as a creator online and how she leverages her content as a source of information for and about, her culture and community, with her audience.
Michelle was the perfect panelist because she feels a large responsibility to keep her culture alive. In her content across all platforms, she shares sacred rituals and her language. Having the opportunity to inspire the younger generation that follows her to embrace who they are and where they come from is a responsibility she is forever grateful for and appreciates: our kind of creator!
