Happy Lunar New Year to everyone. We hope 2022 brings you health, prosperity, and the opportunity to create happy moments. We sat down with Lizzy Wong who shared personal memories about Lunar New Year and how she holds it close to her heart. ❤️
1. What does Lunar New Year mean to you?
It means being with your family and celebrating good health and prosperity and eating lots of yummy food. Every Chinese New Year, I would wake up to my grandma cooking so much food that we needed 2 whole tables for the dishes to sit on. My family and I always did a ritual before eating. We would offer many lucky foods and burn paper money as sacrifices to our ancestors. Then, we always had huge family gatherings where many of the elders gave the children in the family red envelopes aka lucky money to spread good luck and prosperity.
2. What is your favorite new year's memory from childhood?
I loved helping my mom and grandma make dumplings for the new year. It is something we do every year. Then after we made the dumplings, the next morning I knew I would have the best meal of my life.
3. What is your favorite LNY tradition and why?
Receiving red envelopes!!! As a kid this was the best thing in the world. I felt so loved by my family every time I got one.
4. How are you celebrating?
Because of Covid I will probably only celebrate with my grandparents, and now we just do a small dinner instead of a huge family reunion. But usually I spend a whole week at family dinners and eating the best food ever.
5. What is your animal zodiac and do you think it fits you? Why or why not?
I was born in the Year of the Ox. Haha, does it fit me? I grew up thinking other zodiacs were cooler than mine, but as I got older I learned that the ox resembles diligence, dependability, strength, and determination. And I can see now that the ox suits me very well!
