Team Canada's summer athletes have flooded Lima, Peru for the 2019 Pan American Games, running until August 11th. One of the second biggest sporting event behind the Olympics. The Pan Am Games brings together the top athletes of their respective sports from nations of the Americas, every four years in the year before the Summer Olympic Games.
Over the weekend, the best female divers competed in various competitions. Of those divers, our very own Caeli McKay marked herself as the one to beat, capping off her Pan Am games with two medals in two different disciplines. On Saturday, Caeli won a Silver medal in the Women's 10m Platform Final, coming second only to her synchro teammate Meaghan Benfeito, who took home the Gold for Canada.
The next day, Caeli and Meaghan participated in the Women's Synchronized 10m Platform Final, where they dove a 320,64 (leading second place by a whopping 13 points), landing them the Gold medal.
Albeit one of the younger athletes on Canada's diving team, her performance this past weekend at the Pan Ams reinforced the fact that Caeli is a multi-discipline athlete that is only getting stronger in her craft. We're incredibly proud of Caeli for both her medals, and are very confident that this first Gold medal will definitely not be her last. What an incredible way to end a very successful season. Caeli will now take some well deserved time off before she begins to prepare for the Olympic year.
"This event was really, really strong and everybody was diving at their best. On the fourth dive, I don't usually look at the scoreboard, but I knew where I was standing and that put a lot of pressure on me as I knew I had to put my dive down. But I mean, overall, I'm really proud of myself, especially how far I've come this year individually. This is just the cherry on top."
